Overview

Alliant is seeking an exceptional General Counsel and Data Privacy and Compliance Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team in managing a wide range of data and licensing and commercial agreements and advising the business on applicable data privacy, governance, and regulatory matters. The successful candidate will have a proven background in managing data security, privacy, and digital and direct advertising law and will be a committed advocate for best practices in database marketing.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Lead legal team processes for drafting, reviewing, and seeking approvals for all commercial agreements (NDAs, MSAs, data licenses, software licenses, etc.), support business-side negotiations to assist business leaders on critical negotiations as needed, and participate in development of agreement strategy
  • Structure and spearhead operations of Alliant Information Security and Data Governance teams and maintain documented information security policy and conduct annual company risk assessment and disaster recovery planning
  • Drive high-profile and high-impact projects involving privacy analysis and compliance with stakeholders across Alliant’s business to advance practical and business-oriented solutions.
  • Lead cross-functional projects related to data governance, protection, and privacy by design, including data impact assessments, audits, incident response planning, policy and procedures, investigations, incident response and development and training.
  • Provide legal advice as requested related to human resources, vendor relationships, and general corporate matters. Make recommendations for and lead communications with outside counsel as required
  • Lead and develop compliance processes, thus ensuring that compliance, litigation, contractual and other documents are processed and appropriately maintained in relevant systems and according to company policy
  • Establish and validate internal privacy controls to ensure contracts, documentation and communication processes are compliant with current regulations, contractual requirements, and industry best practices
  • Partner with outside resources, industry groups, data governance, technology, and infrastructure teams to define and deploy appropriate standards and procedures
  • Provide ongoing guidance to senior leadership regarding developments in data, privacy, security, internet trends and advertising law and monitor developing regulations and best practices for consumer privacy and data security that may represent new data privacy obligations for the company
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable federal and state privacy laws and accreditation standards
  • Oversee maintenance of contract library to ensure proper documentation for existing contracts and renewals

Qualifications and Skills

  • D. with 7+ years of experience in a corporate environment including at a law firm and/or in-house experience, advising on data privacy matters and aligning a matrixed organization to a consistent privacy strategy preferably with experience with digital advertising technology (Adtech) and direct mail marketing
  • Must be a licensed attorney in good standing with the New York state bar or registered in-house counsel in New York
  • Must be a subject matter expert in current regulations concerning digital and offline advertising, data management, consumer privacy, privacy regulatory landscape, and privacy risk management
  • Extensive experience in privacy review/impact assessment in business processes and technology
  • Must have in-depth experience negotiating a broad range of commercial contracts consistent with corporate strategy and policies
  • Deep understanding of effective operations management of personal data, and enabling data processing for business outcomes
  • Must have demonstrated experience in structuring contractual agreements for data licensing, data acquisition, and product development
  • Working knowledge of FCRA/FACTA regulations for marketing
  • Strong leader with a compelling executive presence and be a strategic through partner to the CEO and leadership team with an ability to communicate and consult with colleagues at all levels within the company
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated experience distilling complex legal and technical issues into clear, concise messaging to a wide variety of audiences including executive leadership
  • Must demonstrate a track record of success in mentoring and leading teams in Legal, Compliance and Data Governance roles
  • Superior time management, planning, and organizational skills, with strong analytic capabilities.
  • Operate with a risk-based mindset with ability to succinctly identify critical areas of concern and construct legally compliant, commercially viable solutions
  • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills, and possess the ability to have fun while working under pressure
